Definition of Phreaking as taken from the Hackers Encyclopedia:
"The act of abusing the phone system the way a hacker abuses computer networks. Also used by Rudy Rucker in his novels to refer to hobbyists who hack systems, as opposed to cryps, who do it for money or power. Derived from a combination of "phone" and "freak", which became "phreak"."
The most common kind of phreaking is called "boxing". Boxing is the production of certain tones into the phone line for abnormal results such as free long distance. Many box tones can be produced using the great (included) program FoneTonePro. I will not go into all the details on what the diferent tones do since alot of info is out there already.
You will need to connect the sound output jack of your Mac to the phone line. This will generate the highest quality tone. Complete instructions follow...
The technique for connecting your Mac audio output jack to the phone line has been around for quite awhile. However, not many people know how so I decided to it here.
This schematic diagram shows all that is needed to create the circut.
T1- 8 ohm to 500 ohm audio transformer, Mouser part 42TL001
VR1-300V MOV, Mouser part 570-V300LA4
This circut is simple to build with a little knowledge of electronics. A good length of shielded audio cable with a 1/8 inch mono plug on one end should be connected to the audio input end. A RJ11 phone jack should be connected to the phone line. Although this circuit will protect against dangerous phone line voltages, it is best to disconnect it when not in use.
The fun you can have with this setup is limitless. You not only can play your favorite phreaking sounds. You can play ANY sound that can be played by your Macs speaker!
I hope this has been informative.
Thanks to Mr. Upsetter who first wrote the instructions for making this circut that were published in Phrack 38.
